Turkey Trip: Day 3

Geniden!

On our third day in Turkey, we saw Assos and Pergamon. It was rad!

long bus rides lead to sleepy students...

Chaille and Spencer sleeping... I have some great shots of a lot of different people...

Professor Schade probably trying to wake us up or something...

Aristotle spent some time at Assos, and there is a statue of him there :-)

Our first stop was Assos, which is referenced in Paul's writings. (see Acts 20)

Temple of Athena at Assos

My dog! I met this cute little guy at Assos and named him Sarcophagus, but we can call him Sars for short--both eat away at flesh :-)

Bro Schade thinks he is a beast...

Malia looking out on the Aegean Sea from Assos

funny story--the island behind me is called Lesbos Island. It is actually the origin of the term "lesbian" (the name "Lesbos" comes from Greek mythology that says Lesbos was the female God of the island). Anyway, a woman named Sappho who lived in the 600s BC on Lesbos island wrote a lot of poetry which is well known for being focused on her love for women. So, the term "lesbian" comes from Lesbos island where there is the "first official record" of a lesbian... I thought that was pretty interesting...

Assos with the Aegean Sea behind :-)

part of the temple of Athena--I am pretending to be a pillar in the picture on the right

I may have played with the dogs the whole trip... they looked cleaner than the animals in Israel have looked... and I washed my hands after touching them! :-)

At lunch--Hunter spilled water all over... Oh Hunter...

Next, we headed to Pergamon, which needed a tram ride to get to, as the acropolis is on top of a mountain.

It was a really windy day, and my hair was everywhere!

Pergamon has this huge theater cut into the steep mountainside

the view from the side of the theater

My class sitting at the top of the theater

Behind Spencer, Sarina, and Nikki is the altar of Zeus which is referred to in Revelation 2 as the Seat of Satan

windy day!

and a final picture with the Pergamon ruins :-)

I had a great time and learned so much!
